INNOVATION IN INDIGENOUS EDUCATION – CONDOBLIN LEADS THE WAY

Indigenous education took on a new direction today with the official launch of the Wiradjuri Study Centre at Condoblin in central NSW. This centre will engage Indigenous learners in a unique model which will drive development and self determination in the Indigenous Community.

Percy Knight, the CEO of the Wiradjuri Condoblin Corporation, said that this initiative would rejuvenate local Aboriginal culture and would incorporate a holistic approach to community and personal development.

“The Wiradjuri Study Centre will use a culturally appropriate strategy to achieve engagement of local communities leading to improved self esteem, a life-long learning approach and improved employment prospects” he said.

He added that this centre would provide a model for other Indigenous communities to adopt as they seek solutions to encourage Indigenous participation in the emerging knowledge economy.

Also at the launch were representatives of Adult Learning Australia, including the CEO, Peter Peterson. Mr Peterson said this event had also been an opportunity to promote Adult Learners’ Week which is an annual national celebration of adult learning held from 1 – 8 September.

The new study centre is an excellent example of adult learning as a vehicle for social inclusion, improved skills and productivity as well as better levels of health and well being” he said.

The event was also attended by local government representatives, Indigenous elders and the Wiradjuri Condobolin communities.
