Amazing ACE

Paying Attention - Effective Mentoring in an 'ACE' setting.

Learning Centres, and the wider world of Adult and Community Education (ACE) are filled with people who have the potential to make a difference for those around them.  So how can each of us, individually and together, play a role in realising that potential?

One of the answers is 'mentoring' - the simple process of paying attention to each other in a way that empowers another to be more confident and effective in what they do. Sometimes this mentoring role will be formal. Sometimes it will be informal (seemingly more like a 'wise friend' or a  good listener).

This workshop aims to build participants' understanding of, and skills in, 'mentoring'.  If you are keen to support others -  through sharing the value of your own experiences and knowledge and listening in a way that draws out their potential - this workshop is for you.

At the workshop you will explore some key questions, such as:

  • What is mentoring - and what is it not?
  • What is the difference between formal and informal mentoring, and when might we use each?
  • What skills in mentoring do you already have, and how can you use them more effectively?
  • What skills will you need to further develop or acquire to be an effective mentor?
  • How can you play a mentoring (or co-mentoring) role in your own organisation or community?
  • How can you be an effective mentor without seeming like a know-all?
  • How do you recognise your own power as a human being, and use it wisely in the support of others?

In addition, this workshop will be the beginning of "Amazing ACE": A WA network of mentors that you can be a part of, supported by Learning Centre Link. As part of this you may link with a 'co-mentor'  - supporting each other to develop your mentoring skills into the future.
