Summary


This session will be of interest to Broadband for Senior’s volunteer tutors who are interested in accessing Skype to communicate via call or video with family members and how you might introduce this feature to your BFS senior community who are learning about ICT. This session will assist with setting up new client accounts, running Skype for a call or a video, finding other family members and logging off as user.


Ian is currently a volunteer tutor at the Kangaroo Flat Senior Citizen’s Centre Broadband for Seniors Kiosk undertaking voluntary work from 10-4pm Monday to Friday. He has a background as a primary school teacher in WA & Vic, a life essentials coach, an information technology trainer and laughter yoga instructor. He has worked with dyslexia-speld and gifted and talented students. He loves mind mapping, Howard Gardner's 9 forms of Intelligence and Edward DeBono's 6 thinking Hats. He has completed Cert IV Assessment and Workplace Training, Cert IV Employment Services and Cert III in Information Technology. Ian will be assisted by Peter Land who is also a volunteer tutor at the Kangaroo Flat Senior Citizen’s Centre Broadband for Seniors Kiosk.

Debra Pinkerton is the current Manager of Learning and Development at Simonds Homes. She is the former CEO of Eastwork Employment Inc, an ACE provider based in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne and Director of Nethena, a consultancy offering business services to the ACE and VET sectors.


Debra has over ten years experience in the training industry, working with individuals and businesses to develop the skills and knowledge required to meet personal and organisational growth.


An accredited training professional Debra holds a Graduate Certificate in Vocational Education and Training and Diplomas in Training & Assessment Systems, Business (Frontline Management) and Financial Services and has worked with a broad range of industries and sectors developing systems, business structures and training models to improve business capacity.

Summary

This session will provide an opportunity for BFS volunteer tutors to share time with Diane who has considerable expertise in the teaching of ICT skills to older learners. Diane will share her knowledge and pass onto you some of the tips and tricks she has used to fully engage her learners.


The session will also provide an opportunity to hear from other BFS Kiosk sites about their training programs. Diane was the Training & Development Officer for COTA Computing Club for seven years until its closure in 2007 and is now working part-time for ASCCA as a roaming/free-lance trainer visiting other ASCCA senior computer clubs and training in our Microsoft Mature Aged Workforce Training Program.


Prior to this Diane taught in TAFE labour market programs, Department of Corrective Services and SkillShare. Diane recently re-located to the Central Coast where she visits clubs and does guest speaker presentations in that area and Sydney.

We invite you to share and have input into the planned community space for BFS volunteer tutors. This community can now be accessed by visiting www.necseniors.net.au and clicking on the 'Online Community' button.  The BFS Volunteer Tutor Community has already been established and it is easy to register yourself as a user and a member of this Community.


Michael has a vast experience across all aspects of online learning and a particular interest in the establishment of online communities. Michael will facilitate discussions on how this space can be established and what are some of the tools we should focus on in creating a space of interest and benefit to all BFS volunteer tutors. After the Elluminate Session we plan to conduct a forum discussion using the BFS Volunteer Tutor Community so we do encourage you all to 'join up' as soon as possible by visiting the online community space.

Ron will lead a practical discussion with those volunteer tutors attending this Elluminate session to provide an opportunity to discuss and learn from each other about the learning principles volunteer tutors are using to engage their learners and how they are providing an environment which aims to build confidence, trust and an enjoyable experience for senior first time computer learners.

His previous education based positions, prior to joining ALA included being a Primary Teacher; a Special Education Teacher; Senior Education Officer within NSW TAFE’s Curriculum Research Branch; Community College Principal and head of Western Sydney ITeC, a large labour market training organisation.


Ron has a Diploma in Special Education, pass degree majoring in Special Education and a Masters Degree related to the field of Ageing and Retirement.

Helen is the ACT Toolbox Champion and a committed advocate of flexible learning and Flexible Learning Toolbox (Toolbox) resources. She has a background as an educator and flexible learning enthusiast in the vocational education and training and university sectors in NSW. She has worked as an educational management and curriculum consultant with various companies to write competencies for a number of training packages, undertake flexible learning research and help small RTO's manage AQTF and educational business requirements. As well as acting as our Toolbox Champ Helen is an online educational designer with the Flex:ed team, Centre for Education Excellence at Canberra Institute of Technology. Helen holds post graduate qualifications in educational management, online education and Indigenous education and is currently undertaking a doctorate at the University of Southern Queensland researching professional development and learning object reuse.

Ron will share his observations about how the BFS Kiosks are moving forward with their training activities and some other possible initiatives for volunteer tutors.

I am currently working at education.au as Education Officer for Global Education and Online Projects. In my current position at education.au I am responsible for the AusAID global education website and am part of a team developing the new Global Projects service hosted at OzProjects: http://ozprojects.edu.au/. As well as creating projects for teachers to use with their students, I support teachers who wish to create their own projects.I regularly present workshops and conference sessions on emerging technologies and online learning.


I have previously worked in South Australian Primary schools as a classroom teacher, and as a teacher of Japanese. I spent some time working with the South Australian Department of Education and Children's Services Learning Technologies team providing professional development for teachers in the use of ICT, digital resources and Moodle.
